The ancient practice of Yoga is becoming more and more popular as people come to realise its many benefits. The word YOGA means unity, the joining of body and mind.  The regular practice of yoga has been seen to have a beneficial effect on muscle strength, flexibility, respiratory and cardio health, stress reduction, mental health and physical and emotional balance.  Some medical health professionals have begun to suggest that yoga can help in certain circumstances.

So what do we do when we begin to practise yoga?  Initially we   learn to move into specific asanas, or poses,  which are designed to work on  the various  parts  of the body.  We learn to match the breathing to the physical movements and to focus on the sensations and effects produced. Every student learns to work at an appropriate level for his or her body and to use”props” to assist in achieving the desired result. Cushions, bricks, blocks, belts and even chairs all have their place.

At the end of the session, comes Savasana, a relaxation pose which enables the body to absorb and process the physical work, perhaps accompanied by a meditation.
