The
group is for those who have studied French in the past to
at least the equivalent of GCSE/O Level. It is not a group for
complete beginners. Very sadly, we have lost our experienced French practitioner Christine Pretty, who passed away recently. We are currently looking
for a replacement.
There
is a strong emphasis on speaking French with the aim of
improving our conversational and listening skills, together with our
grasp of grammar and vocabulary, so we develop the confidence to
use French in everyday situations.
Our
programme has included listening to recordings of
native French speakers, discussions, rôle play, oral
presentations on various topics by group members, translations, word
games and the reading and discussion of articles
from French magazines, journals and newspapers. We
have also done grammar exercises and exercises to help widen
vocabulary. In our own time, we try to watch French language
TV programmes and films. We keep in contact and send items of
interest or for homework to one another by email.
We
meet on the first and third Mondays of each month (excluding Bank
Holidays) between 14.00 and 16.00 in members’ homes (in winter
months we may meet and finish half an hour earlier). The group is full
at the moment but we keep a waiting list. Ideally, new members should
be able and willing to take turns to host meetings in their homes and
to provide refreshments for up to 8 people. They should also bear in
mind that some members of the group have pets, in case allergies
would cause a problem.
